Here's a Story on the Mongoose Canaan Elite, new this year from Mongoose!
Mongoose Canaan Elite
By Michael Frank of Bicycling Magazine.Last fall we ran into Mongoose marketing honch Chris Holmes at Interbike's OutDoor Demo, and he was hyperexcited about the new Mongoose Canaan Elite. Now we've ridden it, and it deserves the props.
Because it weighs a little more than 26 pounds, you might think the Canaan Elite is beefy for an XC racer--until you start to hammer and realize the suspension is so dialed and the spec is so dead-on that the Canaan Elite is perfectly race-ready out of the cardboard. The slightly relaxed (69.5-degree) head angle isn't as aggro as that of some pure race bikes, but that's all to the good, because the Canaan Elite is meant to be the ideal 24-hour machine--a mellower head angle doesn't steer as nervously as a steeper one, and consequently is more forgiving of fatigue-induced brain fade. It also makes the bike more fun as an all-around trail rig.
After months of testing we can certainly vouch for the Mongoose's stable, but not slow, steering. This bike also rocks technical terrain, with the 4-inch-travel Freedrive suspension (a modified version of GT's i-Drive) and FOX shock subtly adjusting to tiny bumps or major trail moguls, and FOX's F100RL fork providing stable, smooth steering. You'll pick up a little fore-aft rocking in this suspension if you tend to stand on uphills, but throw the RP3 into ProPedal mode and that effect instantly vanishes. About the only change we'd make to this bike is to switch to a lighter, tubeless-ready rim, but that's why Mongoose makes the $3,000 Canaan Team, which comes with No Tubes ZTR Olympic Disc wheels, among other upgrades.
HITS: As versatile as a multitool, and a great value
MISS: Lighter wheels are a good first upgrade
